1909 Subi East - Culture and Heritage

To honour to the site’s rich cultural heritage:

  • The precinct was named 1909 in recognition of the year PMH first opened, honouring its enduring legacy as a place of healing.
  • The old Outpatients Building at 1 Roberts Road has been retained for future community use.
  • Godfrey House, on the corner of Roberts Road and Thomas Street, has been retained for future community use. The house was named after Dr. Robert Godfrey, who was the Medical Director of PMH from 1953 to 1979 and resided there with his family. After Dr. Godfrey's family vacated in 1974, the house was used for administrative purposes, including Radio Lollipop and Kidsafe WA
  • The original Boiler House at the centre of the site has been retained for future community use, with sections of the building to be enhanced through public artwork. World-famous artists MOMO (David Momyer), from San Francisco, and Perth-born Abdul Abdullah, collaborated on the 360 degree artwork displayed on the iconic 53 metre Boiler House chimney stack.
  • The site will feature two of the Subi East Six Seasons Bidi markers, recognising the Noongar seasons and celebrating the depth of Noongar knowledge, culture, history and lived experience.
  • A memorial garden will provide a quiet space for reflection, featuring key moments and stories from the hospital’s history etched into paving and integrated into the landscape design.

Completed in December 2023, the public artwork Here Together is a first-time collaboration between artists Abdul Abdullah (Australia), David Momyer aka MOMO (United States) and Creative Road (Australia).
